Stabiae Archaeological Museum at the Reggia di Quisisana
The Museo Archeologico di Stabia "Libero d'Orsi" is housed in the Reggia di Quisisana, in Castellammare di Stabia, and displays 507 finds from the otium villas of ancient Stabiae. Set in a former royal residence and part of the Parco Archeologico di Pompei, it tells the story of the Ager Stabianus through a fresh, engaging display.
For guests at Maricelle Rooms it is an easy cultural stop close at hand: the museum is in the same Castellammare di Stabia where the B&B is based, and from the town centre you reach it on the free Pompei Arte Bus shuttle. A chance to discover the area's Roman past without leaving the Gulf of Naples.
What to see: the Ager Stabianus and the otium villas
The collection brings together 507 finds: wall paintings, marble furnishings, ceramics and bronzes recovered from the Roman otium villas of ancient Stabiae, on the Varano hill. The display also includes a section on pre-Roman Stabiae. Many of these finds come from the very residences you can visit at the Stabiae excavation sites, such as Villa San Marco and Villa Arianna: the sites are where they were dug up, the museum is where they are now kept and shown.
The 360° immersive experience
Along the route, state-of-the-art multimedia create a 360° immersive experience of images, reconstructions and evocative sound that bring back the atmosphere of ancient Stabiae and its otium villas. Real care has gone into accessibility, both physical and cultural, making it a visit that suits families and children too.
