Mount Vesuvius, the Gran Cono climb over the Gulf
Monte Vesuvio is 20 km from Maricelle Rooms, in Castellammare di Stabia. The famous volcano of the Gulf of Naples is climbed to the crater rim along Trail no.5 "Il Gran Cono", which reaches about 1175 metres on a route of medium difficulty.
From our B&B, Vesuvio is the great panoramic outing of the holiday. There is no direct public transport from Castellammare di Stabia to the crater: you reach it easily by car or on an organised tour, or by taking the Circumvesuviana to Ercolano Scavi and then the authorised EAV bus up to the trail. Many guests pair it with a morning at Pompei.
The climb to the Gran Cono
Trail no.5 leads on foot to the rim of the Gran Cono, along a route of medium difficulty with views sweeping across the whole Gulf of Naples, from Capri to the Sorrento Peninsula. Access to the crater is allowed only with a ticket booked online in advance and is accompanied by authorised volcanological guides. Vesuvio completes the archaeological triangle with Pompei and Ercolano, the cities it buried in 79 AD.
How to get there
By car or organised tour
The simplest way: by car to Piazzale Quota 1000 (on the Ercolano side) and then on foot along the trail, or on an organised tour leaving from the area. There is no direct public link to the crater from Castellammare di Stabia. To reach the B&B, see how to reach Maricelle Rooms.
